How to Choose a Workplace Health & Safety Training Provider: 5 Questions to Ask Before You Book

April 2025

A quick Google search for a Workplace Health & Safety or First Aid Course near you will leave you inundated with options for the cheapest and quickest courses.

It can be tempting just to opt for the first and cheapest on the list, but choosing the right provider can mean the difference between ticking a compliance box and genuinely keeping your team safe. Whether you're training for working at heights, confined spaces, emergency response or psychosocial hazards, here are five essential questions to ask before you book.

1. Is the training nationally recognised and compliant with WHS law?

Start by checking if the course is nationally accredited and reflects current Australian WHS legislation and Codes of Practice. If it’s not recognised, it won’t meet your compliance obligations — or protect your team when it counts. Also check if the provider is a genuine registered training provider (RTO), they should have their RTO number on their website. It’s important to note too that different states may have different legislation.

2. Is the training practical, hands-on, and relevant to your workplace?

Hours of dull slideshow presentations and endless theory isn’t the most effective when it comes to WHS.

For training to be highly effective it should be interactive, practical and delivered in the context of your industry. Look for providers that incorporate real-world scenarios, practical exercises, and workplace-specific examples that your team can relate to.

3. Do the trainers have real industry experience?

Trainers with real-world backgrounds bring an extra layer of credibility and insight.

Whether it’s from construction, emergency response or defence, lived experience helps trainers deliver content that resonates and prepares workers for what they’ll face on the job. Plus, they usually tell some amazing stories that keep your team interested and engaged in what theyre learning.

4. What support is provided before and after the training?

A good provider will help you prepare and follow through. From clear course outlines and pre-training information to certificates and post-course support, find out what’s offered beyond the classroom.

5. What do others say about them?

Reputation matters. Look at reviews, testimonials or industry word of mouth. A quality training provider should be able to demonstrate results — and back it up with a proven track record.
