First Aid Training Requirements & Essentials: Preparing Your Australian Business and Team for Any Situation

June 2024

When it comes to workplace accidents, it’s very easy to fall into the trap of thinking “It won’t happen here”. However, anyone can find themselves in an emergency, even in the safest of workplaces. In the critical moments of a medical emergency, the right training can make all the difference.

Equipping your team with first aid skills prepares them to handle a wide range of emergencies, from minor injuries to life-threatening situations is essential. This training not only enhances the overall safety of your workplace but also instils a culture of prompt and effective response that can save lives and reduce the severity of injuries. In this post, we’ll explore the essential components of effective first-aid training, outline the legal requirements, and discuss how to choose the right training provider.

What first aid training is my workplace required to have?

In Australia, the requirements for first aid training and equipment in the workplace are governed by the Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, which vary slightly between states and territories as well as on the nature of the work, and the size of the workplace.

At a minimum, according to the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017 s42 workplaces must provide access to:

  • At least one first-aid kit
  • First aid facilities
  • Trained first aid people (first aiders).

What are the essential components of workplace first aid training?

Basic Life Support (CPR):

CPR and AED Use: Training should cover cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), equipping employees to respond effectively in cardiac emergencies.

Management of Injuries:

Bleeding, Burns, and Fractures: Participants should learn how to manage bleeding, treat different types of burns, and immobilise fractures, essential skills for responding to common workplace injuries.

Medical Emergencies:

Stroke and Heart Attack Response: Training must include identification and initial management of critical conditions like strokes and heart attacks, emphasising the importance of timely medical intervention.

Workplace-Specific Risks:

Tailored Scenarios: The training should consider specific workplace hazards—such as exposure to chemicals or operation of heavy machinery—and tailor scenarios and solutions to address these unique risks.

Implementing and Managing First Aid Training in Your Workplace

→ Start by developing a tailored training plan. This should involve a thorough risk assessment to identify specific needs based on potential workplace hazards and employee health profiles.

→ Plan and schedule training sessions to accommodate all employees, including those on part-time or night shifts, to ensure comprehensive participation without disrupting business operations.

→ Selecting the right training provider is crucial. Choose a provider accredited with the necessary authorities and experienced in delivering relevant training for your industry. Ensure they can customise the content to address your particular workplace risks. Engage employees in the training process using interactive methods like simulations and group discussions to enhance participation and knowledge retention.

→ Integrate the first aid training into your broader workplace safety policies, ensuring it aligns with overall health and safety objectives. Maintain detailed records of training sessions for compliance and audit purposes, and regularly evaluate the training's effectiveness through drills and feedback mechanisms. This proactive approach not only ensures compliance with WHS regulations but also strengthens your workplace's overall safety culture.
